6 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi, you will be picked up and driven to the Kilimanjaro National Park’s Marangu Gate. Here, you will register and begin your trek through the rainforest to the first hut, Mandara Hut, at 2,700m. The trek is approximately 4-5 hours.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast at Mandara Hut, you will continue your trek to Horombo Hut, at 3,720m. This leg of the trek will take approximately 5-6 hours and will take you through moorland with views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

Horombo Hut

(Acclimatization Day) This day is set aside for acclimatization. You will take a day hike to Zebra Rock or Mawenzi Peak to aid in the acclimatization process. You will return to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

After breakfast, you will continue your trek to Kibo Hut, at 4,700m. This leg of the trek will take approximately 5-6 hours and will take you through the alpine desert. You will have an early dinner and go to bed early in preparation for your early morning summit attempt.

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

You will wake up at around midnight and begin your summit attempt. You will hike through the darkness and arrive at Stella Point, on the crater rim, in time for sunrise. From here, it’s another hour-long trek to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, at 5,895m. After spending some time at the summit, you will descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and then continue your descent to Horombo Hut, where you will spend your final night on the mountain.

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Moshi

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, you will begin your final descent to the Marangu Gate. This leg of the trek will take approximately 5-6 hours. At the gate, you will sign out and receive your certificate for successfully completing the trek. You will then be driven back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and some well-deserved rest.
